Lewis Carroll had no problem when he was trying to characterize the queen of hearts for his fantasy novel of Alice in Wonderland, published in 1865. He had a vision of my mother in law at her best, hence the characterization in the queen of hearts in the story.

The story was written for a little girl called Alice Pleasance Liddell. Carroll wrote the story based on a story told to three girls while they were out on a Sunday afternoon, boating on the river, as was the wont of Victorian middle class families of the time.
